Working with Women…All Women.

I find myself in a position that I can’t really say I ever imagined I would be in.  Each day our Brandfolk team collaborates in our office to help our customers and clients grow their business through the use of promotional products and apparel.  The part that I didn’t imagine, is that during those collaboration efforts, I provide the singular male perspective from our team.  I can’t say that I’m the typical “guy’s guy” but right now I am the only guy. This makes standing up for guys team a little bit (or a lot) of work some days.  Is this a bad thing? Not at all, but sometimes… just sometimes.. there can be too much 1Direction and Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber and glitter and… talk.

On a serious note, the things that I have learned since working with all women have been very beneficial to my professional career.  A college professor of mine once talked about the importance of “jargon” and how it allows you to relate yourself to other people’s conversations.  Well, I am now loaded up with plenty of jargon that excludes football, ice fishing or changing the oil.  Another benefit that relates specifically to my position is that they help me out a ton when it comes to seeing design and apparel through a female’s perspective. I have to say that when I first started in the apparel business, I most certainly shied away from selling clothing to females.  Now the clothing options have grown for ladies apparel and so has my knowledge in selling it.  Lastly, I specifically don’t want to forget to mention that it also helped me think before I talk…Sometimes anyway.

On the flip side to that, here are the things that I miss out on by not having those “manly” conversations with all dudes..

– I can’t talk without thinking.

– I can’t talk about the same things over and over again.

– I can’t be ignorant to design and fashion.

Good thing I still have a few guy friends out there that I can get together with on a weekly basis and go over those things.  Otherwise, Mehgan gets to hear me talk without thinking quite a bit.
